Nov 1 at 3 pm  Workshop – Telling Stories to Teach Children with Special Needs

Presented by Jean Alter, LCSW, school social worker at the Windsor Learning Center in Pompton Lakes, NJ, a K-7 academic school for children with special needs.

Exciting new approaches to learning through storytelling and story listening for students with emotional/behavioral disabilities will be presented in this workshop. Through her work as a school social worker, the presenter has found that despite their disabilities, these students have the ability to access complicated ideas through stories. Stories can be a road of access when more traditional tools have failed. Participants will gain skills in choosing appropriate stories; hear stories modeled by the facilitator and work in small groups to develop a story for their own use. Note: This workshop provides 2 Professional Development Credits for educators with pre-registration. Fee $25 for non-members. Email Carol Titus carol.titus@yahoo.com.

Jack and Julie have probed into what the scholars have to say on this issue. The two will present what they have learned, give examples from their repertoire and lead us in discussion as we delve into the connections between myth and folktale and the differences between these and the classic fairy tale.
